Welcome to Shadyside! As the name suggests, this story does not come with sunshine and rainbows, but we promise it’s going to be a wild ride. Fear Street Part 1: 1994, the first frightful film in the Netflix trilogy introduces us to a circle of friends who accidentally encounter the ancient evil responsible for a series of sinister murders that have plagued their town for over 300 years.

Here are 5 things you need to know before strolling down Fear Street Part 1: 1994.

The Netflix film trilogy is based on R.L Stine’s best-selling horror series

You might recognise these iconic book covers from Scholastic book fairs or in your school library. R.L Stine is the mastermind behind some of the most spine-tingling children’s horror fiction novels, including cult favourite Goosebumps. He definitely has a knack for scaring kids – and he loves it.

Director Leigh Janiak was one of many children around the world who grew up reading the Fear Street books. She wanted to infuse the spirit of the books throughout the trilogy — embodying it in the story, characters, and the overall craziness that ensues.

Slasher film fans rejoice

There’s no shortage of bloody murders, creative deaths, and gritty gore in Fear Street Part 1: 1994 — the trilogy has all the inner workings to becoming a slasher film staple.

Director Leigh Janiak even gave her cast a little bit of homework to prepare for filming: a healthy dose of slasher films including The Goonies and Nightmare on Elm Street. Paying homage to classic slasher films from different eras, you’ll find that the film takes inspiration from classics like Scream.

A little surprise for Stranger Things fans

Fear Street features next gen actors who are bound to take over Hollywood someday. In addition to fresh faces Kiana Madeira, Olivia Scott Welch, and Benjamin Flores Jr. as the leads, Stranger Things fans might recognise oneice cream scooper who made a move from Starcourt to Shadyside.

If you didn’t get the memo, Maya Hawke has traded in her nautical uniform for something bolder and bloodier.

A meaningful message behind the blood and masked murderers

Beyond the splashes of blood and gruesome deaths, the Fear Street trilogy tells a story about humanity at its core. It is important to talk about systemic oppression because we’ve all been told that we’re not good enough just for being a little different.

“I think that’s a common thing to feel growing up, especially for anyone who’s been born into a world they feel like they can’t escape. The Shadysiders are born into this world where their fate has already been determined for them. I loved the idea of having our killers be a kind of representation of systemic rot, but that in the end each of our protagonists win,” explains co-writer Phil Graziadei.
