WarnerMedia presents TRAFFICKERS: INSIDE THE GOLDEN TRIANGLE, the HBO Asia Original documentary series that exposes the secretive epicenter of illicit drug production inside the Golden Triangle. The documentary series premieres exclusively on HBO GO from July 23 and follows the rise and demise of three infamous drug kingpins in Thailand, Myanmar and Laos.
The three-part hour-long documentary series is the first documentary that lifts the lid on the hidden world of drug production in the Golden Triangle and dives into this mysterious secretive criminal underbelly revealing tales of some of the most infamous drug lords in the region. It unravels how ‘the Opium King’, ‘The Mekong River Pirate’ and ‘The Playboy Drug Lord’ exploited drugs, war and violence to claw their way to the top. With exclusive interviews from members of their own inner circles, drug enforcement agents, and victims’ families, as well as never-before-seen archive footage and immersive recreations, TRAFFICKERS: INSIDE THE GOLDEN TRIANGLE brings to life the crimes and busts that brought these drug kingpins to their knees.
Episode 1: The Opium King
‘The Opium King’ rained heroin on the streets of New York in the 1970’s, with deadly consequences. With a two million US dollar bounty on his head, dead or alive, the DEA and local drug enforcement agencies attempt to bring Khun Sa, the world’s biggest drug trafficker, to his knees. But ‘the Opium King’ has an army of 25,000 men and, with a heavily fortified base deep in the Burmese mountains, isn’t going to give up without a fight. ‘Operation Tiger Trap’ exploits Khun Sa’s ultimate weakness, and finally brings him and his heroin drug trade to a dramatic end.

Episode 2: The Mekong River Pirate
Thirteen Chinese sailors killed, execution-style and thrown overboard. A theory emerges, declaring the villain behind this massacre is Naw Kham, “The Mekong River Pirate”; a renowned drug kingpin and river taxman in the Golden Triangle. After an extensive yearlong manhunt by a Chinese taskforce in Thailand, Burma and Laos, Naw Kham is finally captured at night as he attempts to cross the Thai-Laos border by boat. Quickly extradited to China, Naw Kham is sensationally sentenced to death on live TV as millions watch. But who was the real Naw Kham? And was he actually guilty of it at all?

Episode 3: The Playboy Druglord
Thai drug enforcement are on the hunt for a high profile “playboy drug trafficker” who is pumping millions of tons of methamphetamines through Thailand. But revealing his true identity isn’t going to be easy. Laotian businessman Xaysana Keopimpha is a prime suspect. He’s a known ‘celebrity playboy’ and his lavish parties and luxury cars are flaunted across social media.
